Eco-Friendly Vegas Honeymoon
Joey's Travel Guide >> Eco-Friendly Vegas Honeymoon
Las Vegas, Nevada probably doesn’t seem like an eco-friendly honeymoon destination. With all the lights and everything being open 24/7 in some ways the city is the opposite of green, but there are always ways to make your honeymoon greener and more efficient. And, Vegas is a great honeymoon choice – it is easy to reach, has so much to do and it can offer great fun and romance for any couple. So, while it may surprise you, we’d like to recommend it as a green option and here’s why.

First of all, Las Vegas is a destination where following general efficiency and earth-conscious practices is especially helpful:
Skip the Housekeeping This isn’t too hard when on your honeymoon. We spent much of our time in our room during our honeymoon (if you know what I mean) so there wasn’t a chance for housekeeping to visit every day. This cuts back on washing linens and replacing toiletries you probably still have plenty of anyway. And if you still want the room straightened, you can request housekeeping just make up the room but not change out linens and toiletries. You may not want to skip having things changed out your whole stay but some days it works just fine and greatly improves your footprint while traveling.
Stay on The Strip Everything is quite close, so you can walk from place to place or take the Monorail which is very eco-friendly, air conditioned and in many cases a much better option than a taxi which can often sit in traffic, so you will actually reach your destination faster on the train.
Bring your Water Bottle Always travel with a handy refillable water bottle so you can use local water (when safe, of course). You can add a lemon slice and even ice to make it a really refreshing drink, which is healthy anywhere but it is especially important to stay hydrated in the dry desert air. And, staying hydrated will make your honeymoon more enjoyable – you’ll have more energy and fewer fuzzy mornings after drinking wine and champagne together.
Enjoy the Great Outdoors! Spending time out in nature not only causes you generally to make a smaller footprint (for instance, you could walk and picnic instead of drive and hit a restaurant), but it also makes you more aware and appreciative of the beauty nature has to offer and can thereby affect how earth-conscious you are in your everyday life. Doing something outside together can also be very bonding, unique and just plain fun.
Visit the Las Vegas Springs Preserve
http://www.springspreserve.org/index.html, a Mecca for eco-friendly practices in the Southwest. They have gardens, trails, art and numerous regional environmentally focused exhibits. While there eat at Wolfgang Puck’s Springs Café (see below).
Take an Outdoor Day Trip Hike, bike or river raft. We love Escape Adventures which offers Vegas area tours http://www.escapeadventures.com. Here’s our favorite Red Rock Canyon tour: Red Rock Canyon Tour and the phenomenal Black Canyon River Rafting Tour: Black-Canyon-River-Rafting-Tour. Or, you can simply head off on your own and do a hike on one of the many area trails without a tour guide http://www.birdandhike.com or http://www.trails.com.
Be water conscious Las Vegas is in the desert, so it is especially important to conserve water there. Share a shower (which is romantic anyway) and make sure to turn off the tap while you brush your teeth.
Furthermore, you’d be surprised how many truly eco-friendly options Las Vegas has. The city is really making a push towards green-ness! So, you can have your dream Vegas honeymoon and feel good about it. Beyond riding the Monorail, here are some recommendations: The Palazzo Hotel http://www.palazzolasvegas.com/greenpalazzo.aspx Not only is this luxury resort a top choice for honeymooners because it is so romantic but it is also LEED certified. They conserve an astounding amount of water and electricity and also have a huge recycling program.
MGM CityCenter http://www2.citycenter.com/environment This newly opened city-within-a-city is a forward-thinking development with resorts, entertainment, shopping, eating and residential all in one. Not only was it designed for optimum efficiency and they of course conserve water and electricity, but they also used reclaimed and recycled materials in building and decorating. There are five eco-friendly and exceptionally luxurious and romantic resorts to choose from. With all it has to offer, you could potentially check into your resort and never leave CityCenter.
Eat out at Beso or go dancing at Eve http://www.besolasvegas.com. This restaurant and club are both exceptionally environmentally friendly – with LEED certification, many built-in efficiencies and recycled and reclaimed materials.
Have lunch at Wolfgang Puck’s Springs Café http://www.springspreserve.org/plan/cafe.html while you visit the Springs Preserve. This lovely café focuses on sustainability with organic and local fare while still being as delicious as you would expect a Wolfgang Puck meal to be.
Dine at the Canyon Ranch Café The Canyon Ranch Café is at the MGM CityCenter inside the Venetian Hotel. They have lovely spa-inspired organic food with seasonal fruits and vegetables and grass-fed, organic meats.
Enjoy your green honeymoon in Las Vegas and let us know if you have any questions or need further recommendations. We are always happy to help you plan your dream honeymoon – especially if you are interested in ways to make it more earth-conscious! Joey
