Eco-Friendly Honeymoon Travel
  Joey's Travel Guide >> Eco-Friendly Honeymoon Travel

What is Eco-Friendly Travel?

Eco-friendly travel (also referred to as ecotourism, ecotravel or green travel) is tourism that promotes a sustainable environment. By its nature, travel can be both an opportunity for people to experience the environment but at the same time is a threat to it. Ecotourism can help the environment while providing income to local people and, with its support of healthy ecosystems, offer a powerful incentive to conserve and protect biodiversity.

Where are the best Eco-Friendly travel destinations?

Ecotourism projects help forge links between human welfare and the protection of biodiversity. Nearly every country has eco-friendly projects now and green travel is flourishing, so you can honeymoon just about anywhere you like and still

make eco-friendly choices. However, there are critical environmental hotspots, such as: the Upper Guinean Forest in Ghana Madidi, Costa Rica rainforest research support program, Belize, the National Park in Bolivia, and the Maya Biosphere Reserve in the Petén Region in Guatemala and many others. See the link below and email us if you would like more suggestions or help planning a green honeymoon – it is one of our greatest passions!

How can I help the environment and take my honeymoon at the same time?

There are many ways your honeymoon can be green and make a positive impact in the world. It starts with just focusing on being earth and culture conscious when you make your travel plans and while traveling. For instance, train and bus travel is more environmentally friendly than flying. And hiking is a great way to see some of the most picturesque regions of the world and yet not impact the region’s resources - as long as you are respectful of the cultures you encounter, reduce, reuse, recycle and of course do not litter. You should also bring your own water bottle and use local drinking water wherever possible and think green in making your accommodation plans as well. You can get close (snuggle in your sleeping bags!) on your honeymoon by camping, which is the greenest way to stay. Most probably think of their honeymoon as being more luxurious than camping, but there are endless options for green hotels and eco lodges, many of them are top luxury hotels. There are more links at the bottom of the page to help you find green accommodation.

When you set up your honeymoon registry with SendUsOff.com, make it eco-friendly by including green registry items. Some ideas for earth-conscious registry gifts are:

  • Fresh food bought in the local market to make our own picnic - $10. This is an easy way to be support local produce and dairy farmers and have a delicious, romantic meal while riding on a train or on a hike or on the beach.
  • A day trip to see local artisans and buy souvenirs - $50. You can do this anywhere, glass blowers in Venice, ceramics makers in France, doll makers in Guatemala, etc.
  • The purchase and planting of three trees OR carbon offsets to cover the carbon emissions of our honeymoon flight – $75. You can leave the planting of the trees up to your guest or plant them yourselves; this can be a special, bonding experience for you as a new couple to plant a tree together and watch it grow over the years!
To really make an impact, consider planning your green honeymoon travel to be an opportunity for the two of you to share a memorable and bonding experience of volunteering. You can visit natural disaster areas and partake in reconstruction efforts or in endangered natural areas you can help with protection efforts. This helps in a more that one way: first it helps the local tourism by the dollars you spend in the area, and second, your volunteer efforts help directly in reconstruction or conservation and can often protect the endangered natural area’s biodiversity. There are many opportunities to volunteer on your honeymoon and these ideas change often based on current needs, let us know if you’d like more information, but ideas along these lines include: Green honeymoons in Thailand where you can volunteer some of your time while there, such as with our friends at Real Experience Thailand. You can also honeymoon in Costa Rica and participating in various research programs, analyzing and collecting the data and working on environmental education and community projects.

Carbon Offset services: Did you know that a single flight from New York to London uses as much carbon as a fully-grown tree can absorb in one full year per person on the flight. Nowadays you can take responsibility for your role in our environment: each time you fly, plant a tree on your own to help the environment absorb the carbon the flight has emitted into the atmosphere. Many airlines now offer carbon offset options as well. And, there are a growing number of groups offering "carbon offset" services. These include:
